Last week Carbine Studios finally revealed the final two playable races for WildStar, the Chua and the Mordesh. This week we are getting a look at a couple major characters that hail from these races; Mondo Zax, a devilish Chua who is a genius when it comes to machines, and Victor Lazarin, the alchemist that inflicted the Mordesh people with the Contagion that essentially makes them space zombies.
Both characters have an interesting back story, which you can explore in full if you continue reading. Let us know what you think of these two characters and what they may bring to the WildStar world!
Mondo Zax is the Chief Technologist for DRED – the Dominion Research and Experimentation Division. Brilliant, maniacal and vindictive, Mondo Zax spends his time devising new and interesting ways to exploit planet Nexus while simultaneously destroying his enemies as painfully as possible.
As the thirteenth child of a less than illustrious Chua family, Mondo Zax was fighting for survival from a very early age. As the undisputed runt of the Zax family, Mondo unsuccessfully battled his siblings for vital resources such as clothing and food, as well as defending himself daily from their physical and mental abuses. The situation only began to improve when members of Mondo’s sibling’s began to disappear under mysterious and unexplained circumstances.
Mondo hoped his newly acquired only child status might bring him closer to his father, a vacu-bot repairman with whom he shared a passion for machines. But a heated argument over engineering principles led to a familial schism between the two – one that was left unresolved when Mondo’s father was inexplicably vaporized during a routine bot recalibration. Without a legal guardian, Mondo was sent to an orphanage, again finding himself in overcrowded, territorial surroundings.
Along with his size and general bad attitude, unsavory rumors surrounding his family’s demise led to bullying from his peers. His peskiest antagonist was a thuggish alpha named Finkle Blurg, whose reign of terror ended when Mondo zapped him with a home-grown particle destabilizer. Mondo’s mechanical ingenuity attracted the attention of the empire, and within weeks, he was installed aboard a research vessel and given supervision of DRED – the Dominion’s Research and Experimentation Division.
Since then, Mondo’s name has become synonymous with mechanical genius, and DRED has been responsible for developing the empire’s most advanced technology – such as the mighty Planet Reapers that continue to ravage planet Arboria. Excited by the discovery of Nexus, Mondo has constructed an orbital research station known as ZLAB to serve as his headquarters, and from there devises schemes of domination, exploitation, and mass carnage.
The once regal Mordesh’s most brilliant alchemist, Victor Lazarin created an elixir meant to grant his people eternal life – but instead cursed them with a terrible Contagion. Working tirelessly on Nexus, he now devotes every hour to seeking a cure for his people’s affliction.
In 1531 AE, handsome Mordesh prodigy Victor Lazarin graduated with honors from the distinguished Grismaran Academy of Alchemical Sciences. As part of the scientific elite that had ensured the Mordesh’s impending membership into the Dominion, Victor divided his attentions between alchemical pursuits and his new bride Mina. The birth of their first child Lucy should have been Victor’s happiest moment, but tragically Mina fell ill and died in labor.
Haunted by the death of his beloved wife, he became obsessed with solving the Alchemist’s Enigma, the secret of immortality itself. For decades, Victor delved into the forbidden secrets of alchemy, pushing the boundaries of traditional science. He was driven. He was relentless. And, in time, he believed he had achieved his goal: the Everlife Elixir. Confident of his success, Victor tested it on himself. The results were instantaneous. Wrinkles vanished, hair thickened, teeth regrew. It seemed Victor had attained the unattainable. Within months, almost every Mordesh on Grismara had taken the elixir.
But the miracle was short-lived. Within months, it became increasingly clear that the formula was unstable. Radiant, unblemished skin became mottled and decayed, and the afflicted soon fell into a mindless, cannibalistic rage. In his very last moments of lucidity, Victor created the Vitalus Serum, a temporary defense that suppressed the Contagion’s degenerative effects and kept the madness at bay. Distributing the serum to the last remaining survivors on Grismara, Victor saved his race from oblivion.
After joining the Exiles, Victor’s efforts were critical in curing several epidemics throughout the fleet, helping the Mordesh gain acceptance among those unsettled by their cadaverous appearance. Now convinced that Nexus holds the secrets to life and death, Victor hopes that someday he will discover a cure for the Contagion and reclaim the forgiveness and trust of his people.
